![]() ![]() ![]() “shall we go on conferring our Civilization upon the peoples that sit in darkness, or shall we give those poor things a rest?”įor Twain, in this particular case, “the darkness” is a metaphor as rich in sincerity as it is in irony: it symbolizes the poor state of everyone else in the world unfortunate enough to not be a western democracy just biding their time until the "benevolent" arm of western imperialism finally reaches them. (Mere coincidence? Probably, but who can say for sure?) The “darkness” in this case is a extended metaphor covering the full breadth of the essay and it most gloriously conceived as a rhetorical question: ![]() Twain’s “To the Person Sitting in Darkness” was published in the second month of an early year of the 20th century: 1901. His books are not bad, but I wouldn't rank them as the authoritative biographies of Elvis. Guralnick also subscribes a bit too much to the notion that Elvis peaked as an artist in the 50's. In the last ten years of Elvis' life the Colonel was arguably one of the worst personal managers in entertainment history, and Guralnick is not nearly as critical of him as he should be. He also is something of an apologist for the Colonel. ![]() Guralnick relies a lot on secondary sources rather than original research. I think the Guralnick books are somewhat overrated. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. In truth, these works only served to advance the imperialist goals of the European colonizers by representing Africans as passionate simpletons at best or as primitive animals at worst. ![]() Here we find out what makes ‘Things Fall Apart’ so worthy of this gigantic reputation.īefore Achebe wrote ‘Things Fall Apart,’ students learning about Africa through fiction had to go through works like Joyce Cary’s ‘ Mister Johnson,’ and Joseph Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness.’ These are supposedly serious literary works with a clean reputation that purported to accurately represent the African man. It is the work with the greatest reputation in African literature. ‘Things Fall Apart‘ is an immensely important novel that shines not only because of the relevance of its themes but also the poignancy embedded within its simplicity, and the greatness lying behind a seemingly basic plot. ![]() ![]() Felicity has buried what she knows so deeply that she can’t even remember what it is… only that she can’t look at Tress without having a panic attack.īut she’ll have to. ![]() She knows that one misstep could send her tumbling from the top of the social ladder, and she’s worked hard to make everyone forget that she was with the Montors the night they disappeared. Our everyday lives are shaped by processes that vastly predate us, and our habits will in turn have consequences that will outlast us by generations. But spans of hundreds of years-the time a molecule of carbon dioxide resides in the atmosphere-approach the limits of our comprehension. The passage of nine days, which is how long a drop of water typically stays in Earth's atmosphere, is something we can easily grasp. "Why an awareness of Earth's temporal rhythms is critical to our planetary survival: Few of us have any conception of the enormous timescales in our planet's long history, and this narrow perspective underlies many of the environmental problems we are creating for ourselves.Explains why an awareness of Earth's temporal rhythms is critical to planetary survival and offers suggestions for how to create a more time-literate society. ![]() |
